The court in Jämsä has given sentences in what was described for Finland as a particularly gross pedophilia case. There were six people convicted, three of whom will serve 10, 8 and 7 years in prison, eligible for parole after 3. The other three will be paroled with community service.
The felons were not named nor were specific crimes linked to specific sentences, but the YLE reports the felony conviction were (including but not limited to,) rape and sexual abuse of a child.
The defendants were unsatisfied with their sentences and are most likely going to appeal but this is about as much as YLE will provide on their website.
The only background provided was that three of the convicted were first arrested since last autumn and the trial started in the spring. One of the accused played the insanity card and the case got moved. The trial continued on Thursday and the sentences were announced today.
I really wish YLE had a little more background information on this one. It's one of the more cruel crimes and for the Finnish legal systems sentences of over 5 years are long. Yes, I personally believe the sentences should be harder, but that's not my main point here.
I had to dig back to previous reports just to find out there were several children victimized.
Since the news post is sparse but not terrible, I'm not slapping the "YLE sucks" tag on this one. Oh, and no name for the reporter. If you can read Finnish check it out here:
